How to Make Cut Flowers Last Longer

How to Make Cut Flowers Last Longer

You just received a beautiful arrangement — now how do you keep it looking fresh for as long as possible$1 Here are the tips I share with every customer at Little Unforgettable Memories.

The Most Important Step: Fresh Water Daily

Cut flowers drink a surprising amount of water. Change the vase water every single day if you can. Bacteria build up quickly in still water, and that's what shortens the life of your blooms.

Cut the Stems at an Angle

Each time you change the water, re-cut the stems at a 45° angle. This increases the surface area for water absorption. Use sharp scissors or a knife — never tear.

Keep Them Away From Heat & Fruit

  • Avoid direct sunlight and heat vents — they dry out petals fast
  • Keep away from fruit — ripening fruit releases ethylene gas which speeds up wilting
  • Don't place near air conditioning units — cold air can brown the edges of petals

Flower Food Actually Works

Most florists include a small packet of flower food. Use it. It contains sugar (food), acidifier (helps water uptake), and biocide (kills bacteria). Mix it into your first vase of clean water.

Which Flowers Last the Longest$2

If longevity matters, ask for:

  • Carnations — 2–3 weeks easily
  • Alstroemeria — 2 weeks
  • Chrysanthemums — 10–14 days
  • Roses — 7–10 days with proper care
  • Lilies — open gradually, last up to 2 weeks

Signs It's Time to Let Go

When petals are dropping, stems are slimy, or the water stays cloudy immediately after changing — it's time. Compost them and order fresh. 🌸
